    Alex,
Come on...you are actually going to believe that they offered him a majorleague contract? Rivera I mean. We are talking about Bergen County, NJ reporting it...only ONE source reported it. It quickly was proved wrong. The only possibility was a minor league contract, which makes sense because like I said before, the upper levels of the farm system is replete, but there was no way he was going to make the ML club. And I have a feeling that the Tribe talked to his agent only right after he was released by the Yanks. REmember one thing, the Yanks never explained the reason behind his release until a day after he was actually released.

Excuse me. Did I say at any time the Pirates were using him as a leadoff hitter? No. Just said the Pirates wanted him to produce. And he didn't. So we are to assume that a player who couldn't be a fulltime starter for the Pirates could be a starter for the Indians?

    Alex,
This is the same team taht had Luis Sojo on the bench to back up the SS and 2B positions. I am sure if Soriano and Jeter go down with season-ending injuries, you are going to see Steinbrenner make a move.
Wilson is a more then capable back-up/part-time/utility player, but if he ever makes it as a full-time player for any club will be surprising. Don't get me wrong, I love his loose attitude and the way he hustles, but like I said, he just is not really someone that you want to insert into the lineup for 150 games.

    Alex,
If you are saying that if we hadn't traded for Cordero, would we still have WIlson on the bench as well? The answer is yes. But would Wilson be starting at SS? The answer would probably be no. However, Johnny Mac is going to fill the role that Wilson had before, so then we would have Cabrera, Wilson, and Mac filling in utility roles. Of course that is better then having Cordero eat 4 mill in salary and be a stiff on the field, but that is what happens when people become enamored with hitting.

Remember that scene in "The Shining" where Jack Nicholson's wife reads what he's been typing over and over ("all work and no play make Jack a dull boy"), and she finally realizes the nut case she's actually dealing with?

I don't think that is completely true. Considering how sucky the middle of the Pirate's infield is right now, Wilson should have been able to crack that lineup. He is a punch and judy hitter with speed, but no patience to walk. That was a negative combination. If Wilson ever learned to walk, he would have been a full-time asset. But after a while, pitchers begin to realize part-time player's tendencies and exploit them.
That is why there is not that much of a clamoring for cabrera to be a full time player. he fits fine as a utility role man. But full-time, his average inevitably drops. That is also why there was some doubt as to Diaz, despite his success through half seasons when Alomar was hurt, they never could tell how he actually would do over an entire season.
